The Tillamook Navel Air Station

I ran across this old Navel museum in my travels and thought a little history might do us all some good. In 1942, the U.S. Navy began construction of 17 wooden hangars to house the K-class blimps being used for anti-submarine coast patrol and convoy escort. Two of these hangars were built at the Naval Air Station Tillamook, commissioned in December 1942 to serve the Oregon-Washington coastal area. (This one at Tillamook is the only one left and serves as an Air Museum)

Length: 1,072 feet
Height: 192 feet

(over 15 stories)
Width: 296 feet
Area: Over 7 acres
(enough to play six football games)
 Doors: 120 ft. high,
6 sections each weighing 30 tons.
220 ft. wide opening. The sections roll on railroad tracks
Catwalks: 2 catwalks, each 137 ft. above the hangar deck

Construction of the two hangars was rushed to completion. Hangar "B" was the first one built and was completed in August of 1943. Hangar "A" which was destroyed in a 1992 fire, was completed in only 27 days. Amazingly, there were no serious injuries or deaths on the whole project. Stationed at NAS Tillamook was Squadron ZP-33 with a complement of eight K-ships. The K-ships were 252 feet long and filled with 425,000 cu. ft. of helium. With a range of 2,000 miles and an ability to stay aloft for three days, they were well suited for coast patrol and convoy escort. Naval Air Station Tillamook was decommissioned in 1948. A few months ago Gary bought this Waco plane from Fred's estate sale and built it up into this beautiful aircraft. Gary thought we might like to see how that pile of sticks I sold him turned out. Not too shabby huh? Gary will maiden it this weekend sometime. Robin

The 21st Annual Central Texas Jet Rally

We would like to thank our sponsors Hobby Express ,BVM Models and Apache Jets.

I want to thank everyone for their help from registration , to the concession stand, parking and emptying trash cans and putting out the signs.  Also a big thanks to the members that helped with the dinner Friday evening and the Steak dinner sat evening.  Without every ones help we could not of had a successful event. There's too many to name and I don't want to miss anyone.

Even though we had bad weather on Friday we still had 25 pilots. They got in a lot of good flying on Saturday as it turned out to be a great day.   We got treaded to a flyby of a P-51 Sat afternoon.

Ok now for the awards --

Best of Show -- Veron Montgomery -- Ultra Bandit

People Choice -- Ivan Via -- F-16 Top Gun -- Steven and Dawn Ellzey -- Bob Cat and King Cat.

Pilots Choice -- Bob Covish -- Flying Shark [ Yes a Flying Shark ]

The pilots raffle prize went to Veron Montgomery and the general public raffle went to Ted Sesso from Ca who flies rc and is in Austin filming a major movie.  All in all I think even with the bad weather the event turned out great due to the pilots and all the great members of ARCA that helped thru out the event.

Thank You Ken CD

The Mayor of Hutto was here and took tons of photos and he was going to send some photo's to us.  I would sure appreciate any other photos of the event.

ARCA visits Preschoolers in Cedar Park!!!!
On Wednesday May 12, 2010 The Austin Radio Control Association presented an Airplane presentation to more that 100 students at “The Goodard School” in Cedar Park to support the theme of the month on “Transportation”. “ARCA” Vice President Edwin Smith made the arrangements, “ARCA” Member at large Morris Duet, Member Christopher Nelle, and President Doug Nelle conducted the presentation that included a Static Display, Fun facts about Airplanes and how they fly, indoor flying demonstration including how to make a “Styrofoam” glider with demonstration; and as a surprise every student received one to take home. I want to thank Morris for bringing his Giant Scale “Aeroworks Yak” , the kids loved it, and Christopher for taking all of the pictures and assisting with the making of 100 gliders. To see the look on those kids faces was well worth the trip; you never know when we as hobbyist might strike an impression on a young mind, may we all share this great feeling.

Thought You Might Enjoy This

Hi Everyone, I just wanted to send this out. My neighbor (Russ Kyler) just got back from England on a dedication. I believe most of you have met him. He's been out a Fred's place and out at ARCA on several occasions. He loves talking about his experience being a fighter pilot in the P-47. He is also interested in RC flying and enjoys coming out and seeing you guys. Ken

I just wanted to pass along this link to the Duxford Museum at Duxford, England. (Home of the 78th Ftr Gp., WW II). I visited them (as a part of my trip to Boxted) on Aug 5th. They were working on a P-47G as well as a couple dozen other aircraft. They got part of the information correct & left out some but that is the way most interviews go :-) :-) :-). We gave a 1/24th scale of a P-47M (HV*J "LORENE") to the Boxted Museum. They are planning their Grand Opening on or about Easter of next year. We also visited the 56th Museum at Halesworth. It is outstanding for an ALL VOLUNTEER operation. (Buzz Took is the "Contact" for Americans). "ROAR OF THUNDER" by Peter Newman was donated to Halesworth by Ralph Johnson (62nd Pilot). The artist donated a copy to Boxted. I was privileged to autograph both prior to them being framed. Click here: http://friends-of-tfc.blogspot.com/

ENJOY !!!!!

This last weekend 52 Pilots took to the air for the 11th Annual “Big Bird Air Show”.  Pilots from all over the state displayed some of the largest and most beautiful Planes dated from the WWII era to the present High Performance Sport Planes.  The weather cleared early Friday morning and provided a break from the 100 deg temperatures.  The spectator participation was superb especially Saturday when at one point there were approximately 250 people watching a wonderful demonstration of flying and also experiencing the popular ‘Static Display” which gave the Spectators a chance to get up close to the Planes and Pilots.  Three of the youngest Pilots included Brian Strachan (age 12); ARCA’s own Christopher Nelle (age 11); and Will Gohnert (age 9),  Will flew with his dad Herb and Grandfather Skip ( 3 generations) all at one event, that was something to see.  Winner of the Pilot Awards were:  “Best of Show” Herb Gohnert; “Pilots Choice” Jim Dietrick; “Best Sportsman” Randy Hammond.  The Raffle Winner of a Ready to Fly T-28 was young Emilio Del La Garza of Tayor, TX.

This event had a great personality mostly due to the hard work of the Volunteers, and I personally want to “THANK YOU” for supporting a very successful Event. Hope to see everyone at the Field.
